Southern Pacific Railroad Golden Pig Service Plaque
Description
Commemorative plaque issued to Robert Yates for his part in the SP Railroad Golden Pig Service Conversion Program. SPRR sold the obsolete multi-level railcars to Greenbrier who then contracted with SPRR Mechanical Department's RAMAC facility in Roseville, CA to convert the railcars into Twin 45' trailer flatcars for use in SPRR Golden Pig Service. Greenbrier leased the railcars back to SPRR Intermodal. Presented to Robert Yates June17, 1983 by William A. Furman Greenbrier Leasing and James J Mac Isaac J Henry Schroder Bank and Trust Co.
At the time of the program SP Intermodal was transitioning from 40' trailers to 45' trailers and 45' trailer railcar capacity was needed to avoid loading only one 45' trailer per flatcar improving slot utilization and increasing the number of trailers per train. RAMAC employees that had been laid off were brought back to work.
