Finalists Sherry Slinkard, Michele Bice, Sharron Carlson, Pat Higgins, and Donna Moore smile and clap as Charleen Shepherd is announced as the new Miss Raytown 1970 by Jill Fleetwood, Miss Raytown 1969, during the Miss America Preliminary Contest, Raytown, Missouri. Farthest to the left, Sherry Slinkard holds a red corsage in her right hand as she wears a light yellow, sleeveless, crew-neck evening gown, with a yellow ruffle around the collar, white lace on the skirt front in a "U" from the gold belt at the waist that ties in a bow at the back of the dress to the bottom of the dress. Green leaves are applied to the lace approximately every foot. She also wears white gloves that extend above the elbows. To Sherry's left, Michele Bice holds a red corsage in her left hand as she wears a sleeveless, v-neck evening gown that has a powder blue bodice and a white skirt with blue scallops. She wears a headband and white gloves that extend above the elbow. To Michele's left, Charleen lifts her head and smiles with her arms down to her sides. Charleen wears white gloves and a sky blue, long-sleeved evening gown with an inset empire waistband and collar and cuffs of blue floral lace with a green ribbon woven in and out of the flowers. To Charleen's left, Sharron Carlson smiles to her right at Charleen as she holds a red corsage in her right hand and a trophy in her left hand. She wears a white, sleeveless, boat neck evening gown with pearls around the collar, white gloves and a pearl bracelet. In front of Sharron, Miss Raytown 1969, Jill Fleetwood, walks toward Charleen holding a crown in both of her hands, from her left side, wears a crown and a white, cap-sleeved evening gown with a ball gown skirt that has white flowers applied randomly on the skirt. To Sharron's left, Pat Higgins is looking to her right at Charleen as she claps and holds a red corsage in her left hand and wears a white, pink spaghetti strap evening gown with ruffles around the top of the bodice and a pink ribbon inset in the center of the ruffle and white gloves that extend above the elbows. To Pat's left, Donna Moore grins to her right at Charleen and she holds a trophy in both hands and a red corsage in her left hand. She wears a mint green, sleeveless, v-neck evening gown with an empire waistline and white gloves that extend above the elbows. Four other contestants can be seen clapping on the back of the stage.
