Contestants Pat Higgins, Cheri Hatfield, Charleen Shepherd, Kathleen Ellis, Michele Bice and Sherry Slinkard stand with their left sides to the photographer during the evening gown portion of the Miss America Preliminary Contest for Miss Raytown 1970, Raytown, Missouri. Farthest to the left, Pat Higgins wears a white evening gown pink spaghetti strap with ruffles around the top of the bodice and the bottom of the skirt and a pink ribbon inset in the center of the ruffle, white gloves that extend above the elbows, and pink pumps. Behind her, Cheri Hatfield wears a gold yellow, long-sleeved, turtleneck evening gown with an empire waistline and a mock scoop-neckline. Behind Cheri, Charleen Shepherd wears white gloves and a sky blue, long-sleeved evening gown with an inset empire waistband and collar and cuffs of blue floral lace with a green ribbon woven in and out of the flowers. Behind Charleen, Kathleen Ellis wears a gold lamé, long-sleeved evening gown with four button down the top center of the bodice. The sleeves are translucent with gold lamé cuffs. She also wears green gloves. Behind Kathleen, Michele Bice wears a sleeveless, v-neck evening gown that has a powder blue bodice and a white skirt with blue scallops. She wears a headband, white gloves that extend above the elbow, and white pumps. Behind her, Sherry Slinkard wears a light yellow, sleeveless, crew-neck evening gown with a small ruffle around the collar, a gold belt, white lace in a "U" on the skirt front from the golden belt down to about 6 inches above the hem line. Green leaves are attached to the lace about a foot apart. She also wears white gloves that extend above the elbows.
