All of the contestants stand on stage wearing evening gowns during the Miss America Preliminary Contest, for the Miss Raytown 1973 pageant held at Raytown South High School in Raytown, Missouri. Farthest to the left, Gwendolyn Kay Norton (23) wears a long-puffed-sleeved, square-neck evening gown with a white bodice with yellow daisy centers in a row at the top and bottom of the bodice down the center of the bodice as well as around the cuffs and two rows of daisies around the bottom of the yellow skirt. She wears a headband and pumps. To her left, Judith Holliger (22), wears a mint green, empire waist, sleeveless, turtleneck evening gown with white bric-a-brac with green flowers down the center of the bric-a-brac around the collar and in three vertical stripes on the bodice. To her left, Carla Jill Cathlina (21) wears a turquoise, long-sleeved, scoop-neck evening gown with white lace around the waistband and the cuffs and white pumps. To her left, Candis Blythe Culberson (20) wears a white, long-sleeved, turtleneck evening gown with a lace bodice, an empire waistline, and bell cuffs. To her left, Debra Gayle Haff (19) wears a purple, long-sleeved, turtleneck evening gown with white lace down the center of the bodice and around the empire waistline. To her left, Dell Ann Smith (18) wears a deep peach colored evening gown with cap sleeves, a large ruffle around the jewel neck collar, and an empire waistline. To her left, Charlotte Clark (17) wears a white, long-sleeved, square-neck evening gown with a burgundy vest with a diamond pattern laced over the bodice and the same pattern outlines the cuffs and pumps. To her left, Vicki Lou Bennett (16) light pink, sleeveless, v-neck evening gown with wide, shiny satin belt with a pink bow at the bottom of the bodice. The skirt is pleated. To her left, Jolene D. Steve (15) wears a sky blue, sleeveless, jewel neck evening gown with a jeweled inset waistband and a ball gown skirt. To her left, Ann Marie Miller (14) wears a pink, sleeveless, boat-neck evening gown with an empire waistline. To her left Mary Muehleback (13) wears an aqua, long-sleeved, turtleneck evening gown. The bodice is white with white lace sleeves and aqua ruffles outlining the cuffs, collars, button placard. The buttons, skirt and belt are aqua. The satin ribbon belt is tied in a large bow just below the bodice. A large ruffle is around the bottom of the skirt. To her left, Janice E. Murray (12) wears an aqua, long-sleeved, turtleneck evening gown with floral ruffles outlining the keyhole bodice, empire waistline, collar, and cuffs. To her left, Kathleen York (11) wears a white, v-neck, sleeveless evening gown with gold bric-a-brac outlining the collar and the empire waistline and pumps. To her left, Kristy Ann Smith (10) wears a light pink, sleeveless, crew-neck evening gown with a jeweled outline around the collar and around the empire waistline. She wears a bow in her hair. To her left, Mischell Dutton (9) wears a white with black polka dots, long-puffed-sleeved, scoop-neck evening gown with a broad black empire waistband and black pumps. To her left Diane Swift (8) wears white, long-sleeved blouse with small ruffles around the scoop-neckline and the cuffs and a empire waist black skirt with a white snowflake pattern in squares. To her left, Victoria L. Mueller (7) wears a aqua, sleeveless, keyhole neck evening gown with silver lace outlining the collar, keyhole, and around the empire waistline. To her left, Constance Pickett (6) wears a yellow, long-sleeved, v-neck evening gown with a translucent floral overlay of yellow, orange, and purple and pumps. To her left, Pamela Ann Shiel (5) wears a white, sleeveless, scoop-neck evening gown with a tiny black belt at the empire waistline that ties in a bow at the bottom of the bodice. To her left, Lisa Cole (4) wears a red and white, short-puff-sleeved, scoop-neck evening gown with a vertically striped bodice and two pockets and a checked skirt with a gathered empire waistline. She wears a matching choker. To her left, Nancy L. Ulshafer (3) wears a long-puffed-sleeved, scoop-neck, empire waistline evening gown with large pink and lavender flowers with green leaves on a white background. To her left, Marta Lynn Leader (2) is mostly obscured by Bonnie Kay Hall (1), farthest to the right. Bonnie Kay wears a white, sleeveless crew-neck evening gown with a pink lining under the bodice of white lace. The inset empire waistband is a pink satin ribbon tied in a bow at the base of the bodice. All contestants wear their blue and white contestant number ribbons attached to their dresses on their left hips.
