From their right sides, contestants 17 through 23, stand on stage in their evening gowns during the Miss America Preliminary Contest, for Miss Raytown 1973 held at Raytown South High School in Raytown, Missouri. Farthest to the left, Charlotte Clark wears a wears a white, long-sleeved, square-neck evening gown with a burgundy vest with a diamond pattern laced over the bodice and the same pattern outlines the cuffs. In front of her, Dell Ann Smith wears a deep peach colored evening gown with cap sleeves, a large ruffle around the jewel neck collar, and an empire waistline. In front of Dell Ann, Debra Gayle Haff wears a purple, long-sleeved, turtleneck evening gown with white lace down the center of the bodice and around the empire waistline. In front of her, Candis Blythe Culberson wears a white, long-sleeved, turtleneck evening gown with a lace bodice, an empire waistline, and bell cuffs. In front of Candis, Carla Jill Cathlina wears a turquoise, long-sleeved, scoop-neck evening gown with white lace around the waistband and the cuffs. In front of Carla, Judith Holliger wears a mint green, empire waist, sleeveless, turtleneck evening gown with white bric-a-brac with green flowers down the center of the bric-a-brac around the collar and vertically on the bodice. In front of Judith, Gwendolyn Kay Norton wears a long-puffed-sleeved evening gown with a white bodice with yellow daisy centers as well as around the cuffs and two rows of daisies around the bottom of the yellow skirt. She also wears a headband.
