Contestants 1 through 6 stand on stage wearing evening gowns during the Miss America Preliminary Contest, for Miss Raytown 1973 held at Raytown South High School in Raytown, Missouri. Mostly out of the photograph on the left side, Bonnie Kay wears a white, sleeveless crew-neck evening gown with a pink lining under the bodice of white lace. The inset empire waistband is a pink satin ribbon tied in a bow at the base of the bodice. To her left, Marta Lynn Leader (2) wears a light blue, long-puffed-bell-sleeved, jewel neck evening gown with brown lining under blue lace on the bodice and cuffs. To her left, Nancy L. Ulshafer (3) wears a long-puffed-sleeved, scoop-neck, empire waistline evening gown with large pink and lavender flowers with green leaves on a white background. To her left, Lisa Cole (4) wears a red and white, short-puff-sleeved, scoop-neck evening gown with a vertically striped bodice and two pockets and a checked skirt with a gathered empire waistline. She wears a matching choker. To her left, Pamela Ann Shiel (5) wears a white, sleeveless, scoop-neck evening gown with a tiny black belt at the empire waistline that ties in a bow at the bottom of the bodice. Farthest to the right, Constance Pickett (6) wears a yellow, long-sleeved, v-neck evening gown with a translucent floral overlay of yellow, orange, and purple. All contestants wear their blue and white contestant number ribbons attached to their gowns on their left hips.
